Final SUV chronicles: We tried the Palisade, the Telluride, the CX-9, and the Ascent.

My wife didn’t want anything GM, nor did she want the Ford Explorer. She wasn’t enthused about the Pilot or the Highlander, either. Let’s clear that up to start with. And yes, we researched the shit out of all of them.

We drove the Palisade. Sat in a Telluride. Both felt...cheap. The door handles on the Palisade were wobbly enough that even my wife noticed when she went to open the door. The touch screen moved when we touched it - not purposely. XM radio wasn’t even offered on the model we drove. And, the upholstery on the door panel was torn. This on a 2020 with 15 miles. And at a higher price point than the Subaru.

The Palisade and the Telluride both had the wide center console that intruded on seat room, which my wife hates. The CX-9 did, too.

The Ascent felt the most solid. And smooth. It was beyond comfortable and easy to drive. It drives like a big car - which I like. I’m quickly becoming a Subaru fan.

All the safety gizmos are nice. Subaru “EyeSight” is crazy cool. And the lane keep assist works well without being intrusive. We tried it and it politely steered us back into our lane on a side road close to the dealer.

Apple CarPlay is sweet and so is Subaru StarLink (remote unlocking/locking and remote start with your phone). Overall, I’m pretty satisfied with the level of tech it offers. The only things this one is missing, being a Limited instead of a (top-of-the-line) Touring are a sunroof and cooled/ventilated seats.

The CVT isn’t as bothersome as some Nissan units I’ve tried. It simulates an 8-speed automatic and has a “manual” mode. Plenty of power from the little Boxer four-cylinder. The engine itself is interesting to me, especially with its top-mounted oil filter.

It does 0-60 in less than 7 seconds... which means it’s faster than my 6.

If you don’t like it, well, that’s fine. No need to chastise me over buying a crossover for my wife instead of a manual WRX.

I’m cautiously excited to enter the word of Subaru ownership.

The dealer offers a lifetime powertrain warranty as long as I have my service done there. They surprisingly have good customer service ratings, too. The downside is that they’re about 35 - 40 minutes from my house. Hopefully, we won’t have to be there often.

We are calling around to some banks on a Monday to get the best loan rate. They’re holding it for us until then.

Have some photos:

I was going to say keep in mind that the motor isn’t very big a nd is hauling a LOT of car around and to be prepared for the whole thing to go tits up around 80k, but if it’s lifetime warrantied at the dealership, I would not be concerned.

I hope you enjoy it for years to come!

Nice! My sister and I looked at a redesigned Forester, and price and availability were the only things holding her back. Otherwise, excellent car. A couple observations, though.

1. Why get rid of the CX-5 now? When I tell people I may get rid of my RAV4 in the next couple years (2012 with 90,000 miles), they think I’m crazy! I know the family may grow, but I didn’t think anything was wrong with the CX-5.

2. I’m shocked the Limited doesn’t come standard with a sunroof. Subaru loves making sunroofs standard even on their lower trims.

Also, something I meant to ask. Are there surround view cameras?

No hate from me, I’ll be in a similar boat when my wife’s lease is up.

Having 2 small children presents a lot of challenges, car wise. My wife wants 3 rows because reasons next time, but doesn’t want anything too big. Or American. Or cheap.

I’m doomed, but the Subie seems like a great choice. Enjoy!

When I was 3, my mom got her MPV. After 5.5 years, my parents realized the only person that used the third row was the dog. They never drove other people around, either, so they traded it in on a Rogue.

Then, the Rogue was in the family for over a decade. The longest my parents ever had a car. Its unfortunate death led to the car searching scenario mentioned in my original comment.

The filter sits on a tray. Typically I will unscrew the filter so it unseals and drains, the will remove it the rest of the way. The small amount of mess that occurs is contained without issue. I’ve never had a problem with it the few times I’ve given a friend a hand with an oil change.

Just make sure you ge t every scheduled maintenance done before you hit the mileage for it. Usually dealers that offer the lifetime warranty like that will have the stipulation that voids it if you miss a single factory scheduled service. As long as you’re on top of that it’s a great deal though.

I’ve had this car (same color even) since late April. Absolutely love it. The only difference is I upgraded to the full moonroof package-so it’s basiclaly a Touring without the Napa leather ventilated seats. Knowing the amount of liquids that my two kids will spill , I was ok going with the faux leather seats instead. The moonroof is a game changer though, love that feature.

I upgraded from a Mazda CX-5 (see: two kids now)-I loved how the Mazda drove and the Ascent was the only big SUV I found that had anything close to that sporty feel, while still feeling like you’re driving a big car. All the tech features are great as well-I looked at the Atlas, Telluride, Expedition and a few other big cars and the Ascent was hands down the best drive. Couldn’t be happier with my choice.

Sometimes you sacrifice style to gain handling and performance. Plus the Subaru has one of the highest resale values. I have a 17 WRX and I'm not thrilled with the design of the vehicle. Add some aesthetic mods and it's not half bad. Honestly I don't really care that the design isn't that great. How the car drives and handles is what I care about most. It more than makes up for it. This is how this reality works... You can't have everything. I like the cx9 design for the most part, but ultimately they do not hold their value.

You are going to have to bodge together a real hood scoop for that intercooler as a first mod :) (I was wondering how the airflow was routed - looks like the top slot of the grill feeds the intercooler - neat way to incorporate it.) I’m still torn on the eyesight thing - it works great, but it bugs the dickens out of me. Maybe I need to step into the current century...

I thought it was sarcasm, that doesn’t compute for me, I would’ve thought it would be a huge mess.  So does it drain back as you pull it?  Must be similar to a cartridge.  Now that I think about it a bit, it makes more sense.  The messy filters I’ve experienced were all side or on an angle of some sort.

Oh, I thought it was some inside joke about how terrible the mess is with the filters, but yeah it makes sense now.

Well is no S class ;).  I know the back seats of my S4 got real snug for kid transport duties.

Did you check out the vovlo xc90? We bought one bc we thought the ascent felt cheap.

The filter should collect metal fragments from the 2.4l engine goes as some Ascent owners has seen on the forums.

Though he’ll pay through the noise for dealership maintence that 200K warranty will be pre-paid, whether he uses it or not.

Hey. I’m an Ascent owner. Had two Subaru’s before this one. I Purchased in Feb and am already getting a transmission replacement before it even hits  10k miles. I discovered I’m not the only one. Just as a heads up check out all of the issues folks are having here https://www.ascentforums.com/threads/list-your-transmission-problem.5715/

Because the filter is at the top pointed down oil doesn’t collect in it when the motor isn’t running, it drains out the moment the pump turns off. The metal dish sits in, that you can see in the picture Boxer_4 put up , is wider than the filter by a few mm all the way around  and collects any last drops when you unscrew the filter.

True, Resale value on 4runners is really amazing.

I don’t think that resale value makes up for all of the other shortcomings.

Look into a vovlo xc90. Checks all of your boxes.

Seems like a vovlo xc60 would fit your needs well.

I liked the Ascent when I was checking out cars at the Subaru dealer, minus the generic exterior styling. Since the inside is what counts, the Ascent’s interior is pretty good.

The model that really surprised me in a bad way was the Outback. The interior door pulls were super loose and would visibly distort the entire door card when pulled. Not sure if it was just that car but it was a brand new unit at the dealer.

Good luck with the numbers—I’m sure you and your wife will be very happy with the car itself.

P ersonally I feel the Subaru lacks style. Inside and out. I checked most of the options out there as well. I ended up with the 8 passenger Teluride SX. It had everything I was looking for and then some, (including dual sunroofs), all wrapped in what I believe is a very modern, sharp looking vehicle. I agree the Suby looks like a 90's vehicle. I couldnt be happier with my choice. 10 years of warranty and free oil changes for life doesnt hurt either

Happy Kia O wner

TBH the Ascent looks pretty good up close! Congrats!

It’s quite handsome for the kind of thing it is.

I see a list of sliderless minivans.........

Fun-poking aside, glad you found something you liked. Did you get a chance to give the 3rd row a try?

Yeah. Stuff like this is giving me pause. We are going to test drive a Highlander today, as well. Just to be sure there Ascent is what we really want.

Yeah. We both sat back there. Not too bad, honestly. I could find a comfortable position easily and so could my wife.
